In the oat breeding program at Ottawa, AAFC, the breeding lines are renamed when they reach the stage of Preliminary Test. Before that stage they are named by their pedigree history. The convention is to give a cross a uique sequential OA number (OA stands for "Ottawa Avena"), and breeding lines advanced to the preliminary test stage from the same cross is numbered by the cross name plus an extension of "1", "2", etc. This function was designed for this purpose. Other breeding programs may find this useful.
